The World's Strangest Time Zones

Curiosities · July 30, 2026 · 2 min read

Time zones look tidy on a classroom map: 24 neat slices, one hour apart. The real map is a glorious mess, bent by geography, politics and national pride. A short tour of the oddities:

The half-and-quarter club

India runs the world's largest half-hour zone at UTC+05:30 — one clock for 1.4 billion people, a compromise between Mumbai's and Kolkata's solar noons. Iran (+03:30) and Myanmar (+06:30) join the half-hour club, while Nepal goes finer still at UTC+05:45, aligned to the meridian near Kathmandu. New Zealand's Chatham Islands keep +12:45, and the tiny Australian border town of Eucla unofficially observes +08:45. Check the live time in any of them on our city clock pages.

Beyond the twelfth hour

Offsets don't stop at ±12. In 1995 Kiribati moved its Line Islands to UTC+14 so the whole country could share one calendar day — creating the earliest clocks on Earth. In 2011 Samoa jumped across the date line to trade more easily with Australia and New Zealand, skipping 30 December 2011 entirely: citizens went to bed on the 29th and woke on the 31st.

One country, one clock

Since 1949 China has kept a single zone, UTC+08:00, though the country spans five solar hours; in far-western Xinjiang, "Beijing time" sunrise can arrive after 09:00, and locals often keep an informal two-hour-earlier clock. Spain has run on Central European Time since 1940 despite sitting on Greenwich's longitude — one reason Spanish evenings run famously late. And the country with the most time zones? France, with twelve, thanks to its overseas territories.

Every one of these quirks lives in the IANA time-zone database, which is why a good time zone converter — rather than mental arithmetic — is the only safe way to schedule across borders.
